Shannon Bates & Zainab Outlaw

Shannon Bates

Shannon Bates is a San Diego musician and writer who earned her bachelor's degree in Music Composition from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington.  She currently plays saxophone and flute in a few musical groups around San Diego, including an alternative rock band called riboflavin', a jazz ensemble called the Moonlight Serenade Orchestra, and a jazz combo called 3rd Track.  One night per quarter, she plays solo saxophone improvisations for the Poetry and Art shows at the San Diego Art Institute.  Shannon hosts the Soapbox open mic at the Livingroom coffee lounge in Old Town on Sunday nights, and she reads her short stories and poetry at Poetic Brew (Claire de Lune) and Vibes (Coffeehouse on Broadway) regularly.  She has been a featured poet/writer at the Alta in Newport Beach, California, where she will be featuring again in the summer of 2004.  On May 19th, 2004, she will also be featuring at the Ugly Mug in Orange, California.  Shannon's work reflects the rhythm of music in her blood, as well as her fascination with the extraordinary details in ordinary things.

Zainab Outlaw

This, self-described, self-destructive teenager found her niche in performance poetry. Her poetry has evolved from the trite ranting of a bitter youth to something that you can really sink your teeth into.
